Dukh Bhanjan - Night of Contemplation

Sound moves what silence cannot reach.

Why Dukh Bhanjan Exists

Dukh Bhanjan means, simply, the dissolving of suffering. This year marks the seventeenth annual gathering, continuing a tradition that has been held for more than sixteen years. Throughout the night, practitioners gather not simply to sing, but to accompany one another through shared practice, carrying one another from darkness into light.

Dukh Bhanjan is held in partnership with Raj Academy, and is offered freely, without charge, to anyone drawn to the practice.

how the night unfolds

The night moves in stages — continuous Simran in Raag to settle into the space and the Sangat, sustained singing and meditation through the hours of darkness, with quiet pauses woven naturally between. Nothing is performed. Everything is practised, together, until morning.

who is it for

Dukh Bhanjan is open to all — no prior experience with Naad Yoga or Gurmat Kirtan is required. It is a substance-free gathering; participation under the influence of alcohol or other substances is not permitted.

Dukh Bhanjan is a Tree Event.

Participation is offered freely. In place of a registration fee, participants are invited to plant a tree, a small gesture of gratitude.

what to expect

Bring a pillow and something warm. Arrive twenty minutes before the gathering begins.

The evening begins in stillness, as the sangat settles into the space together. From there, the night unfolds through sustained mantra singing in Raag – voices joining one by one, sound rising and receding in long waves through the hours of darkness. Quiet pauses come and go, simply part of the rhythm. As the sky begins to lighten, the singing softens and the night closes the way it opened: in stillness, together.

Every gathering becomes part of the living tradition of the Council.

The night asks nothing of you but presence. What it gives back cannot be planned for, only received. You can only sit through the night and let it come.

What happens in a single night of singing cannot be explained to someone who wasn’t there. It can only be repeated.

If you are drawn to it, that is enough to begin.
