sound therapy

The application of sound. The discipline of the trained voice.

WHAT IS sound therapy

Sound Therapy is the intentional application of raag through the trained voice to support emotional and physical wellbeing.

It is not simply music for relaxation or performance. It is the application of a structured system in which specific raags are understood, within the tradition, to relate to particular emotional qualities.

Where Naad Yoga is a practice of listening for its own sake, Sound Therapy is that same structured listening turned toward another person — the trained voice and the chosen raag applied in service of another person’s wellbeing.

WHY SOUND

Within the tradition of Guru Nanak, sound is understood to reach aspects of human experience that words alone often cannot.

This understanding is expressed through the structured relationship between raag, listening, and the human emotional landscape. Each raag carries a precise melodic and rhythmic form, and that form is understood to correspond to a particular emotional quality.

The tradition holds emotional and physical wellbeing as connected rather than separate: a person’s emotional state expresses itself through the body, and the voice — trained and applied with precision — is understood to reach both.

Lineage

Within the Gurmat traditions of sound, Sound Therapy descends from Guru Nanak’s teaching that sound and listening are inseparable from the resolution of suffering — “Sunniai dookh paap ka naas” — through listening, pain and wrongdoing dissolve.

Professor Surinder Singh, Yogi of Sound, carries this tradition forward as its contemporary teacher, having spent decades in its study and transmission.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Sound Therapist the same as Naad Yoga Teacher Training?

No. Naad Yoga Teacher Training and Sound Therapist are distinct but closely related disciplines within the Gurmat traditions of sound.

No. Sound Therapist is not a substitute for medical or psychological care. It is a discipline with its own history, structure, and standards, practiced alongside — not in place of — appropriate professional care where that is needed.

Within Sound Therapy, diagnosis refers to the disciplined observation of qualities expressed through sound and voice — a practitioner’s trained listening, not a clinical or medical determination.

No. Sound Therapist addresses states, not only conditions — stress, emotional weight, the ordinary difficulty of being a person. It does not require a diagnosis in the clinical sense to be relevant to someone’s life.

No. The training builds listening and vocal capacity from the ground up. What it requires is time and sustained commitment, not prior musical background.

Sound Therapist training under the Raj Academy´s standards unfolds over three years, structured around Sunniai, Gaviaia, and Anhad.

Sound Therapy is not something to receive passively. It is a discipline someone practices, and a relationship someone cultivates.
It is something to experience.

The tradition asks for time. It asks for consistency. It asks for the kind of attention that cannot be hurried. And it gives back, across years of practice, something that is difficult to name and impossible to replicate through any other means.

If you are drawn to it, that is enough to begin.
